Experience Report

Hello, my name is Janis Wittrock. I am 20 years old and I undertook an internship with the BVMW Singapore from the end of May until the end of August 2008.

Janis Wittrock (Intern)

I had different plans for the time between my civil service and university studies, but when I was offered an internship in the representation of the BVMW in Singapore, I was immediately enthusiastic. My interest in travel and foreign cultures and countries has always been there since my childhood, so it was no difficult decision to go to Asia.

Excited and full of expectations I reached Singapore. My colleague kindly picked me up from the airport. Singapore was quite impressive and overwhelming. But due to the good infrastructure, the kind help of my colleagues and the open and friendly inhabitants, it was not long until I had settled. While the food was still an adventure and challenging , I  was positively surprised by some dishes.

Fortunately, it was quite easy to get in contact with the locals but also to other German trainees. The open nature, friendly atmosphere in the office made the work very pleasant. Participation in business meetings and events have helped to get a good insight into the business world and to improve my English skills. Due to the broad areas of work and various projects, the period of my practical training was very interesting and exciting.

I would recommend an internship in Singapore at any time. The cultural diversity, the open nature of the population, the Singlish, the culinary diversity, and the small adaptive difficulties in comparison to other Asian countries and the perfect location for quite cheap trips to other parts of South-East Asia, make Singapore an attractive destination. The nightlife shouldn’t be neglected too.

The internship was a great and unforgettable time, that brought me new friends behind and a deeper insight view into South-East Asia.
